How to Craft the Arbalest Crossbow in Valheim?

The recipe for this weapon calls for 10 Wood, 8 Iron bars, and 4 Roots at a Level 1 Black Forge. This new crafting station was brought in with the Mistlands update currently on Valheim’s Public Test Branch and requires 10 Black Marble, 10 Yggdrasil Wood, and 5 Black Cores in order to be made. The level 1 Arbalest has a 200 Pierce damage stat and impressive knock back of 210. These both blow away even the strongest of traditional bows in Valheim. Upgrading this weapon at the cost of 5 Wood, 4 Iron Bars, and 1 Root improves this crossbow’s Pierce damage by 3 and durability by 50.

This comes at a clear cost, however, as this crossbow is challenging for players to wield. Firstly, the Arbalest requires about 4 seconds to fire once a bolt has been shot. Secondly, this counter gets reset by jumping and sprinting which are essential parts to avoiding enemies. The final drawback of this weapon is its small durability stat (50) which is lower than most bows of the same quality in Valheim.

There are currently four different types of bolts that can be crafted and fired from the Arbalest: Bone, Iron, Blackmetal, and Carapace. These can each be created at the new Black Forge in Valheim and each will produce 20 bolts with the following ingredients:

Where to Find the Ingredients for an Arbalest Crossbow?

Notable for this new weapon is that none of these items are unique to the new Mistlands biome. Wood, the easiest of the ingredients to track down, can be found in all over the world of Valheim by chopping down Beech and Fir trees. Iron Bars are produced when players place Scrap Iron into an active Smelter. Scrap Iron is most commonly found within the Swamp biome and mined from Muddy Scrap Piles.

The final ingredient, Roots, are drops from the horrible Abomination creatures also found in the Swamp biome. These are aggressive creatures that are weak to Fire damage but should not be taken lightly. As one player has shown, these creatures are a match for even Valheim’s challenging Trolls. Fortunately, killing just one should get players enough Roots to craft the Arbalest.

Valheim is available now for PC, and releases in early 2023 for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
