Valheim spent its first two months as the highest-selling game on Steam, and his since accumulated over 7 million copies sold. While Iron Gate AB would likely not trade away that success for the world, the massive player count came with bugs and issues that the team had to work through. But now it could finally be time to consider porting Valheim to consoles, and that is what the developer just brought up.

Now that the Valheim Hearth and Home update is live and many of the initial bugs have been taken care of by the team, Iron Gate AB’s co-founder Henrik Tornqvist told GamesRadar that bringing Valheim to consoles is a discussion that is on the table. No release window was given, nor was this a confirmation. But for console players who have been interested in Valheim, it is nice to hear that the door is officially open.
It is rarer than ever for a popular game to remain exclusive to one platform, especially PC, without it being owned by the platform it is on or some strict licensing deal being in place. With Valheim blowing up the way it did, it makes sense for the title to expand onto consoles. There are likely plenty of console fans that have been watching the Viking-themed game with great interest, so it is exciting to think that the game could be on the way at some point. The game has also been a popular streaming title, which can be the case when one player base is unable to enjoy it thanks to it being “locked” on one platform.
If Valheim were to come to consoles, there could be the chance that Xbox or PlayStation tries to strike a deal for some version of exclusivity, as well. There was a time in which Xbox gobbled up PUBG first, for example. It could certainly be the type of game that one of the two attempts to steal away from the other. That being said, Iron Gate AB has the opportunity to strike the iron while it is hot with Valheim, as it has been a big hit. So if and when a console port does happen, it could be beneficial to release it on as many platforms as possible.
Valheim is available now in Early Access on PC.
