Fans would likely recognize both Sakaguchi and Matsuno’s work in the Final Fantasy universe. Sakaguchi’s name appears in the credits of many Final Fantasy titles, whether as a designer, director, or producer. On the other hand, Matsuno is known for his work on the classic, well-loved Final Fantasy Tactics, and one of Square Enix’s niched RPG titles, Vagrant Story. Given that they have worked on many of the company’s highly-followed titles, it seems only apt that one or the other would be aware of what the other is currently working on in the video game industry.

In a recent interview with a Japanese site, Sakaguchi was asked whose work he has closely paid attention to the most in 2021. He mentioned that Matsuno was working as a scenario writer for a game, and that he is looking forward to the kind of writing that will be produced. Sakaguchi did not give any details regarding the title of the game or what platform the game will be on, likely leaving many readers guessing. Since Vagrant Story has yet to receive a sequel or remake, fans may speculate that this is what Matsuno may be working on.

However, it is also possible that Matsuno may be working on writing more scenarios for Square Enix’s MMO, FF14. He has already written several storylines for the MMO’s expansions such as Stormblood and Shadowbringers. What’s more, Matsuno has also been seen playing FF14 with Sakaguchi, who has recently beat Endwalker. With both men highly immersed in Square Enix’s online game, it is very likely that more scenarios are in Matsuno’s creative pipeline.

With no official news from Matsuno, fans will just have to wait for updates from the man himself. With Final Fantasy 14’s Endwalker expansion primed to add more content in the coming months, some of the scenarios may have already been written by Matsuno. However, RPG players may be looking for a change of pace, with some Vagrant Story fans hopeful that a sequel or a remake will be announced, with Matsuno at the helm once more.
