The team planned to take its first trip to Africa on Aug. 27 for an all-day event featuring clinics, tours and a reception in Dakar before the international basketball tournament in Spain. That’s no longer the case.

USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo told Stein that the organization was disappointed it would not be able to make the trip. 

It has been a rocky go of things for Team USA in advance of the World Cup with Paul George’s horrific leg injury , Kevin Durant’s decision to remove himself from the team and DeMarcus Cousins’ recent injury scare.

“After the World Health Organization “noted that the Ebola outbreak in West Africa constitutes an extraordinary event and a public health risk to other [African] states.

“The circumstances just don’t allow us to go.”

The United States opens up Group C play at the FIBA World Cup on Aug. 30 against Finland.
