On Thursday, October 13th, just after midnight, the US Safety Commission posted a mysterious tweet that simply read, “Man made of chainsaws. Hm.” Over 130,000 likes later, it’s safe to say that the tweet has since gone viral online. They did not even have to say the name of the anime for fans to know what they were talking about, even if the other people are likely left scratching their heads in confusion about this mysterious tweet and why it’s so popular.

Chainsaw Man, based on a popular manga series, released its first episode on October 12th, 2022. Chainsaw Man follows a man who makes a contract with a creature called Pochita that allows him to turn parts of his body into chainsaws. He goes on to join the Public Safety Devil Hunters on their mission to hunt down and destroy devils living in the world of humans. It’s violent and weird and wonderful, and one episode in it already has people excited.
In case you are wondering, no, this is not a usual tweet for the US Safety Commission to make. Typically, they use their Twitter to post things like product recalls and safety reviews, as well as tips on how to handle dangerous equipment safely. However, with this tweet, the public are left wondering exactly who is behind this Twitter - and just how much anime the US government may be watching.
In all actuality, the tweet is likely a joke, and it did its job of bringing the US Safety Commission into the limelight for a solid 24 hours or so. They also used their temporary popularity and momentum to share real safety tips for using chainsaws (though they did disclose that if you are in fact, a chainsaw yourself, then these safety rules do not apply). They also clarified that a person made of chainsaws would not fall under their jurisdiction considering he is a person and not a product, after all.
It’s not often that we get a chance to get a great meme from the US government, and while this one may be short-lived, its fun while it has lasted. We applaud the person behind the US Safety Commission Twitter for doing a bit of promotion for Chainsaw Man in an unexpected way, and also for sharing some real chainsaw safety tips with anyone who might have gotten any weird ideas from this week’s premier. Keep enjoying anime, random government worker, you have our support.
